The Rotorua Youth Centre Youth Employment (YEP-R) team are making a difference in the lives of many local young young people while meeting the needs of local employers with quality employees and ongoing support as and when needed!

One of those young people is Waipai Knight.

Waipai reached out to our youth employment plus team looking for guidance into employment.

Prior to employment Waipai had been unemployed with no income for some time, living in motel accommodation which lead to a lack of confidence and self-esteem.

While she had a lot of transferable skills, an awesome attitude and work history, she struggled to find employment due to an apparent lack of job opportunities. That was until she got in touch with one of our Youth Employment navigators.

Waipai showed incredible reliability, attitude and determination; attending every appointment, phone call and maintaining constant communication with a navigators while studying part-time at Te Wananga O Aotearoa where she studied business development.

So impressed were our Youth Employment team with Waipai’s professionalism and attitude that we were inspired to create an initiative within our organisation to help staircase this remarkable young woman in to her chosen field.

We custom built an internship programme, committing to six months paid employment in order to turbo-boost Waipai’s confidence and administration skills. On the 3rd of July we welcomed Waipai to our team as our front of house reception and administration support!

A learning plan was developed and implemented including Microsoft Office products training, basic accounts and the use of Xero accounting software, WordPress website content management, report writing, minute taking, First Aid training, bookings management, point of sale (POS) operation, working with young people and much more. By the time Waipai completes her six month experience with the youth centre she will be so equipped with useful skills that she will be an asset to any organisation!

Since taking this opportunity, Waipai has been able to move in to her own home and a sense of accomplishment and purpose has lead to a happier and healthier life.

We are very confident that Wapai will be snapped up by employers who value reliability, hard work and a great work ethic and attitude!
